Empowering Dystonia Patients with Complete Recovery

Natural therapy based on cutting edge research in neuroscience.
Focal Dystonia is a neurological condition which affects a muscle or group of muscles, causing involuntary muscular contractions and abnormal postures. As the 3rd most common neurological condition in the world, there is currently no medicinal cure for the hundreds of thousands of people affected by its symptoms. Dr. Joaquin Farias, a leading specialist treating dystonia using movement therapy, approached the Fullstack team with the challenge of creating a complete online dystonia recovery program. Our team was particularly excited about this project, as this would provide dystonia patients across the world with complete recovery, for the first time ever.
Discovery
The goal: Easy access, a personal feel, and from anywhere in the world.
Dr. Farias’ revolutionary thinking behind the concepts of Dystonias and Focal Dystonia Treatment yielded success with over 2,000 patients worldwide. But with over 200,000 conditions in the US alone, he reached a crossroads: how could one person make a worldwide impact for Focal Dystonia sufferers? The answer would be surprisingly simple, yet difficult to accomplish: create an online subscription platform where patients across the globe could have easy access to the necessary tools to reach a full recovery, without losing the personal feel.
Strategy
Tailored video-based programs for patients on life-long healing journeys.
We started with the information architecture of the platform. To ensure patients could navigate each program in a structured manner, we created a flexible hierarchy specifically designed to facilitate the long-term healing process. Because we were using video, it was inspired by the leading video streaming option today: Netflix. The result was then adjusted based on Dr. Farias’ unique experiences with thousands of patients worldwide, as it has been proven to show results.
Experience
Designing a familiar experience, focused on rehabilitation.
Like any rehab program, Dr. Farias’ platform needed to be 100% focused on content & recovery. Our mission during the UX design process was to ensure that patients spend the least amount of time figuring out where things like notifications and videos can be found. The recovery process should feel familiar as possible, almost as if they were visiting Dr. Farias himself.
Familiar User Interface
The UI design was heavily inspired by popular platforms such as Facebook & YouTube, in order for it it to feel familiar and intuitive to new users.
Familiar Regimen
The recovery courses were marked with individual colors resembling a pill organizer. This ensures each patient has a simple daily schedule, while getting the proper dosage of each program pillar.
Design
Inspiring each user, daily.
Enrollment made simple with an enticingly visual experience. Since there was such great imagery & video from the beginning of the process, we focused on designing pages that would do the media-heavy content justice in whatever context it is being showcased – from larger retina displays, down to smartphones.

The patient homepage is a place to explore a variety of tools designed to help patients improve the way they move, feel, and perceive the world around them.
Fit for on the go.
Created to be device agnostic, the platform scales well from mobile device to desktop.
Development
Building an integrated platform.
While the patient experience was our main focus, it was just as important for us to allow a smooth administrative experience. From adding new programs to content protection, managing subscriptions and users, it’s all inclusive.
Secure Login, Simple Account Setup, Spam-Free Commenting
We integrated Facebook deep within the platform to allow users to easily setup their account during setup, securely login when returning, and connect with others in the community while going through their recovery process.
Flexible & Scalable Content Management System
We built the entire platform on Wordpress because of its simple, extensible user interface. Its open ecosytem allows for easy maintenance, management. Additions such as a discussion forum, blog, and event management features can be easily added, all of which will be added in 2019.
Smooth and Secure Video Streaming
We integrated Vimeo to ensure each video would be responsive and performant even under high traffic. Videos are easily imported into the platform for the creation of new classes. They are a breeze to view from anywhere, on any device.
Ultra Secure Individual and Recurring Transactions
We integrated Stripe to ensure any transactions made on the platform are as secure as possible. From the front-end, users can pay monthly or yearly. From the back-end, Dr. Farias can easily manage payments and get real-time reporting on the subscription revenue.

With this new web platform, dystonia patients across the world now have access to everything they need to fully recover in just one place: information, training, and community.
From specific exercises for every form of dystonia, to a diet to reduce symptoms, including exclusive dance choreographies, tai-chi forms, or meditation exercises, patients can find all the information they need at just the click of a button. And with the community forum launching in 2019, patients will be able to learn & communicate with other patients around the world.
